Tate Mode Mini Controller: Play Games in Portrait Mode Now!

If you're a dedicated gamer, you've likely encountered the challenges of playing vertical arcade games on your smartphone, often finding the experience less than satisfying. Enter Max Kern, a creative modder who has developed a solution to this common issue: the Tate Mode mini controller. But the real question is, does it genuinely address the problem?

Traditional controllers are designed for landscape mode, much like those used with the Switch or Steam Deck. Yet, many classic vertical shooters and retro games require you to hold your phone in portrait mode, akin to scrolling through Instagram. This is where Max Kern's innovation comes into play.

Max has engineered a compact USB-C gamepad specifically for portrait-mode gaming, also known as Tate mode. This tiny controller plugs directly into your phone's USB-C port, eliminating the need for Bluetooth connectivity, charging, or additional batteries.

Utilizing a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip, Max 3D-printed the case and buttons via JLCPCB. For those interested in replicating his work, he provides a comprehensive tutorial on his YouTube channel.

What’s Your Opinion on This Tate Mode Mini Controller?

Powered by the GP2040-CE firmware, this mini controller functions as a standard HID controller, making it compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac devices. Its versatility is impressive given its small size.

However, there are concerns about the strain it might place on the USB-C port, as the gamepad partially supports the phone's weight. This could lead to potential issues with the connector over time, requiring you to carefully balance both the phone and the controller during use.

On Reddit, opinions are mixed. Some users express admiration for the ingenuity, while others worry about potential hand cramps and overall comfort. It's worth noting that this isn't a commercial product but rather a DIY project. Max has generously shared all the necessary firmware and print files on Thingiverse and GitHub.
