The long-awaited sequel to the beloved adventure game, Ōkami, announced at last year's Game Awards, has finally received some clarification. While details remain scarce, IGN's recent interview with the project leads revealed crucial information. The sequel is, indeed, a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's storyline.
Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed the sequel's narrative continuity. Director Hideki Kamiya playfully hinted at Amaterasu's return, a confirmation later provided by Hirabayashi.
While not surprising to fans, the sequel's existence raises questions about the Nintendo DS prequel, Ōkamiden, starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu. Ōkamiden received mixed reviews, partly due to its platform and the absence of key original team members. Hirabayashi acknowledged the game's existence and the varied fan reception, emphasizing that the new sequel directly follows the original Ōkami's narrative.
Ōkami's ending inherently suggests a sequel. Amaterasu and another character embark on a new, unexplored journey, leaving ample room for new challenges and adventures.
However, fans will have to exercise patience. The sequel is in its very early stages of development, with the early announcement driven by the team's excitement. Further updates are expected sometime in the future. A link to the full interview is provided.
