"Adult's First LEGO Mario Set Purchase: No Regrets"

by Emily Apr 26,2025

As a practical person, my approach to spending money is straightforward: I focus on essentials and occasionally indulge in video games when they're on sale. However, last year marked a change when I considered purchasing a LEGO set, something I hadn't thought about since my childhood days of building LEGO. The reason for my hesitation? LEGO sets, especially those linked to popular franchises, often carry a hefty price tag. It wasn't until I saw the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant on sale for under $50 that I decided to add this unique "potted plant" to my desk.

My interest in the Piranha Plant set was sparked by IGN's review. As a long-time fan of Mario games, this set seemed like the perfect way to showcase my passion for the franchise. While LEGO's botanical line offers beautiful flower sets, none capture the whimsical and slightly terrifying charm of the Piranha Plant.

My LEGO Piranha Plant

Having built the set, I'm thrilled to have it on my desk. It transports me to the Mushroom Kingdom every time I glance at it, imagining I'm tending to my own little Piranha Plant during work hours. The building process was as enjoyable as the final product; it took an afternoon but was challenging enough to keep me engaged throughout. This is currently my only LEGO Nintendo set, but my experience has definitely piqued my interest in expanding my collection.

How Much Are You Willing to Spend on a LEGO Set You Love?

The LEGO market can be pricey, especially with new adult-targeted sets costing over $200. It's easy to get carried away, but there's a fine line between treating yourself and overspending. The Piranha Plant set at under $50 felt like a reasonable indulgence for me. It provided hours of enjoyment and now adds a daily dose of joy to my workspace. Is that joy worth more than $50? To me, it certainly is, but that's my spending threshold.
