Ark: Ultimate Mobile Edition, the latest mobile port of the hit open-world multiplayer survival game, has surpassed three million downloads. Aside from being a healthy number on its own, it's also very positive for the folks at Snail Games, Grove Street and Studio Wildcard as it shows a 100% increase on the previous release of Ark on mobile.
For those not in the know, Ark: Survival Evolved is as you might expect an open-world multiplayer survival experience set on an island inhabited by pre-historic dinosaurs. You'll need to collect resources, craft weapons and build a base to survive not just the island's inhabitants but other players.
With the release of Ark: Ultimate Mobile Edition, the aforementioned devs supplanted the previous, somewhat barebones, release with a brand-new version that boasts higher-end graphics and optimisation. That includes a roadmap of popular maps set to arrive in-game later in its lifespan courtesy of Grove Street Games.
Everybody walk the dinosaur
It's strange to think just how far we've come in the span of a little under half a decade. The original Ark for mobile seemed to languish a bit, and very much seemed to lack the long-term support needed to support something in its genre. But, I'm pleasantly surprised to see Grove Street claw back some real wins after the disaster of the GTA Definitive Trilogy by aiding in this latest release.
If I had to wager, I'd say that both the fact that hardware capabilities and optimisation have come so far likely contributed to Ark: Ultimate Mobile Edition being so popular. But the thing to watch now is just how long that'll be the case, and whether they can carry this success long-term.
