Baldur’s Gate 3 Dev Larian Says Its 'Full Attention' Is on Its Next Game, 'Media Blackout' for the Foreseeable

by Emily Mar 18,2025

Larian Studios, the creative force behind the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3, has announced a media blackout, signaling their full commitment to their next, unannounced project. While players eagerly anticipate Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8 later this year, Larian’s focus has shifted entirely to this new endeavor.

Swen Vincke, Larian’s boss, recently reflected on the studio’s journey with Baldur’s Gate 3, acknowledging its immense success but hinting at future plans. He tweeted, “Got me all nostalgic - it really has been an incredible journey so far. But the story ain't over yet. Stay tuned. Going to try to skip the dark night of the soul moment though if you don't mind.”

In a subsequent statement to VideoGamer, Larian confirmed that the team’s full attention is dedicated to their next game, initiating a period of media silence.

Details about this new game remain scarce. What we do know is that it won’t be a Baldur’s Gate 3 sequel or any other D&D-related project. Instead, Larian is venturing into uncharted territory with a completely original title, a decision made after internal discussions revealed a lack of enthusiasm for a direct Baldur’s Gate follow-up.

Previous statements from Vincke offer tantalizing, albeit vague, clues. In November 2023, he teased that the new game would “push many boundaries,” expressing significant excitement about the project. Earlier, in July 2023, he mentioned the possibility of a future Divinity: Original Sin sequel, but emphasized that it wouldn't be the immediate next project, prioritizing a creative refresh after the intensive Baldur’s Gate 3 development.

The nature of Larian’s next game remains a mystery. Given their history with fantasy RPGs, speculation ranges from a new fantasy setting to a completely different genre, perhaps even science fiction or a contemporary setting.

It seems likely that it will be some time—potentially years—before any further details are revealed.
