Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed details about a shelved project: a Baldur's Gate sequel.
A Playable Baldur's Gate Follow-Up Abandoned
Larian CEO Swen Vincke disclosed in a PC Gamer interview that a follow-up to BG3, potentially Baldur's Gate 4, reached a playable stage. While acknowledging its potential appeal to fans, Vincke explained that after years of D&D-related development, the team desired a change of pace. The prospect of potentially spending another three years on a similar project led to the decision to shelve both BG4 and planned BG3 DLC.
The team's morale significantly improved after this decision, according to Vincke, who emphasized the desire to pursue original ideas. The studio is now concentrating on two unannounced projects, described as their most ambitious yet.
A New Direction for Larian
With the Baldur's Gate franchise temporarily on hold, Larian is likely to return to its Divinity series. While a Divinity: Original Sin 3 sequel has been hinted at, Vincke assures fans it will be a departure from expectations. The final major patch for Baldur's Gate 3, including mod support, cross-play, and new endings, is slated for Fall 2024.
