"Batman: Revolution Unveils Burton-Verse Riddler in 1989 Sequel"

by Julian May 21,2025

Tim Burton's iconic Batman universe continues to expand with the announcement of a new novel, *Batman: Revolution*. Penned by John Jackson Miller and brought to you by Penguin Random House, this thrilling addition introduces the Burton-Verse's take on The Riddler. You can secure your copy by preordering it on Amazon.

Following the success of 2024's *Batman: Resurrection*, also written by Miller, *Revolution* is set to captivate fans once more. The story unfolds between the events of the 1989 *Batman* and 1992's *Batman Returns*, drawing inspiration from Burton's unproduced third Batman film, which was rumored to feature Robin Williams as The Riddler.

Here's the official synopsis for Batman: Revolution:

*It’s summer, and Gotham City has reason to celebrate. The lingering effects of The Joker’s toxic legacy have finally dissipated, paving the way for the mayor to collaborate with retail magnate Max Shreck on a grand Fourth of July celebration. Yet, not all is well. Batman remains ever-vigilant as threats from rival gangs and masked criminals intensify daily. Concurrently, public protests mount against the city's lavish indulgences.*

*No one feels the tension between Gotham’s hope and despair more keenly than Norman Pinkus. The unassuming copy boy at the Gotham Globe, he's the unsung genius behind the newspaper's wildly popular Riddle Me This word puzzles. But Norman harbors a secret: he is the smartest man in Gotham City, solving crimes anonymously through the police tip line—often before Batman is even aware of them.*

*Despite his efforts, neither recognition nor wealth come Norman's way. He believes in Gotham's potential and the pursuit of justice—until he no longer does. Overlooked and undervalued, he watches as the city and its leaders idolize Batman. Disheartened, Norman, now known as The Riddler, hatches a plan. With the aid of perilous new allies, he stokes the simmering unrest of the long, hot summer to engage the Caped Crusader in a dangerous game of riddles, aiming to unveil Gotham's true savior. As their battle unfolds, Norman and Batman uncover secrets from Gotham’s past that will shape the city's future.*

*Batman: Revolution* is slated for release on October 28, 2025, and is available for preorder on Amazon.

DC Comics isn't resting on its laurels either, continuing to expand the Burton-Verse. Following the release of Batman '89, a sequel to Returns that introduces a Billy Dee Williams-inspired Two-Face and a Marlon Wayans-inspired Robin, DC has released Batman '89: Echoes. This comic brings in a Jeff Goldblum-inspired Scarecrow and a Madonna-inspired Harley Quinn. Additionally, DC has published two volumes of Superman '78, serving as sequels to the Christopher Reeve Superman films.
