"Breakout Beyond Revamps Atari's Classic Game"

by Emma May 13,2025

The iconic 1976 game Breakout is set to receive a modern makeover with Breakout Beyond, a fresh take on Atari's classic brick-breaking game. Developed by Choice Provisions, the studio behind the BIT.TRIP series, Breakout Beyond introduces a unique sideways progression, where players move from left to right, maintaining the traditional paddle-and-ball mechanics.

The core objective remains to break bricks, but the game ramps up the excitement with increasing combos, accompanied by dazzling lights and effects. Special bricks in the game trigger a variety of spectacular effects, from massive explosions to activating a laser cannon, enhancing the gameplay experience. Breakout Beyond will feature 72 meticulously designed levels, along with an unlockable endless mode that includes a global online leaderboard, challenging players worldwide to compete for the top spot. For those who prefer company, the game also offers a local two-player co-op mode.

Originally intended as an exclusive title for the Intellivision Amico in 2020, Breakout Beyond's development took a new direction when Atari acquired and decided to complete the project. Ethan Stearns, Atari's Senior Director of Games Publishing, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, "We're thrilled to be able to bring this gem to our players. The team thought it was a brilliant concept, preserving the heart of Breakout's gameplay while also giving the formula a completely new spin. Breakout Beyond is a worthy new entry into the Breakout pantheon, and we can't wait to see the insane combos brick-breakers will make."

The Intellivision Amico, announced in 2018 with an anticipated release in 2020, has faced numerous setbacks and delays, and has yet to launch. Last year, Atari acquired the branding and rights to Intellivision, excluding the Amico console itself.

Breakout Beyond is slated for release later this year across multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS, ensuring that players on various systems can enjoy this innovative take on a classic game.
