Where You Can Buy the Original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Ahead of the Switch 2 Release

by Nicholas Nov 03,2025

Nintendo has officially unveiled all the details about the highly anticipated Switch 2 during its April Direct, and fans are now eagerly awaiting the launch of preorders in the U.S. While the console’s price point was largely in line with expectations, the cost of launch-day first-party titles certainly raised a few eyebrows. Most notably, Mario Kart World will carry a $80 price tag at release. Alongside the pricier games, Nintendo is rolling out a new lineup of Switch 2 accessories, many of which have seen noticeable price hikes compared to their original Switch counterparts—and some have even increased in price since their initial announcement.

One accessory that stood out is the new Switch 2 Pro Controller, now priced at $85. For longtime Switch owners who already have multiple original Pro Controllers, this could feel like an unnecessary added expense. The good news? Nintendo confirmed in a recent developer interview that the original Switch Pro Controller will be fully compatible with the Switch 2. This means you won’t need to upgrade unless you specifically want the new features.

While the new Switch 2 Pro Controller may appeal to some, it’s not required for most gameplay experiences. If you already own the original Pro Controller, you can confidently continue using it and save $85 for new games or other accessories. For those without one, the standard Switch Pro Controller remains a solid and more affordable option at $69.99.

Be aware that stock for the original Pro Controller may dwindle as the June 5 Switch 2 launch approaches, with retailers prioritizing the newer model. Amazon, for example, is already experiencing limited availability and is primarily listing third-party alternatives. In addition to the Pro Controller, Nintendo has confirmed that original Joy-Con controllers will also work with the Switch 2—though for most players, especially in action and sports titles, the Pro Controller remains the preferred choice.

When Will the Switch 2 Pro Controller Be Available?

The Switch 2 Pro Controller will launch alongside the console on June 5. Preorders for the Switch 2 are expected to begin on April 24, and that’s likely when the new accessories, including the Pro Controller, will become available for preorder as well. It’s important to note that the Switch 2 Pro Controller is designed exclusively for the new console and will not be compatible with the original Switch.

Preorder listings for the Switch 2 Pro Controller have already appeared on Walmart and Best Buy, though official preorder dates have not yet been activated. Walmart’s listing also includes upcoming Switch 2 game titles that will soon be available for preorder.
