This remarkable event took place on Thursday, celebrating Cifuentes' achievement as the reigning champion and the success of nine other Chilean competitors who advanced to the second day of the competition.

At the youthful age of 18, Fernando Cifuentes was invited to the presidential palace alongside his fellow competitors. They were greeted with a warm reception, enjoying a delightful breakfast with President Boric and participating in a lively photo session. The Chilean government expressed immense pride and admiration for the group's accomplishments. Esteemed government officials were also present to congratulate the talented young players.
President Boric shared his thoughts on the positive impact of trading card games on Instagram, highlighting how these communities foster collaboration and friendship through competition.
In addition to the recognition, Cifuentes was presented with a large, framed custom card featuring himself and Iron Thorns, the Pokémon that helped him secure the championship. The card's inscription, translated from Spanish, reads: "Fernando and Iron Thorns. Ability: World Champion. Fernando Cifuentes, hailing from Iquique, made history as the first Chilean to be crowned world champion during the Pokémon World Championships 2024 Masters Finals in Honolulu, Hawaii."
President Boric's familiarity with Pokémon adds a personal touch to this event. A known fan of the franchise, he revealed during his 2021 presidential campaign that Squirtle was his favorite Pokémon. To celebrate his victory, the Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs gifted him a Squirtle and Pokéball plushie, acknowledging his affection for the Pokémon anime.
Cifuentes’ Near-Elimination and Subsequent Win
Cifuentes' journey to the championship was not without challenges. He narrowly avoided elimination in the Top 8 match against Ian Robb, who won but was disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct after making an inappropriate gesture on camera. This unexpected turn of events led Cifuentes to face Jesse Parker in the semifinals. Despite the setback, Cifuentes triumphed, defeating Parker and runner-up Seinosuke Shiokawa to claim the $50,000 grand prize.
