Deltarune’s Toby Fox recently shared an update on the development of the game, offering fans a glimpse into the progress of the much-anticipated sequel to Undertale. Here's a detailed look at what Fox revealed in his latest newsletter.
Toby Fox Shares Deltarune Progress Update
Toby Fox, the creative mind behind the critically acclaimed Undertale, has provided fans with an exciting update on the development of Deltarune’s upcoming chapters in his latest newsletter. Deltarune marks Fox's second major project, following the success of Undertale.
In his Halloween 2023 newsletter, Fox confirmed that Deltarune’s Chapters 3 and 4 are planned for a simultaneous release on PC, Switch, and PS4. Although Chapter 4 is nearing completion, the release of both chapters is still some time away. Fans have already shown remarkable patience, with the first two chapters being released for free in 2018 and 2021, respectively.
Currently, Chapter 4 is in its polishing phase. All maps are complete, and battles are fully playable, though some adjustments are still needed. Fox detailed that two cutscenes require minor improvements, one battle needs balancing and visual enhancements, another needs a better background, and "two battles are having their ending sequences improved." Despite these tweaks, Fox describes Chapter 4 as "basically playable minus some polish." Three of his friends have played through the entire chapter and provided positive feedback.
Fox highlighted the challenges of releasing the game on multiple platforms and in different languages. He noted, "It wouldn’t be such a big deal if the game was free, but since this is going to be our first big paid release since UNDERTALE, we really have to take the extra time to make sure it’s perfect." Before the release of Chapters 3 and 4, the team has several critical tasks to complete, including:
- Testing new functions
- Completing the game’s PC and console versions
- Localizing the game to Japanese
- Bug testing
According to Fox’s February newsletter, development for Chapter 3 is complete. While Chapter 4 still requires some adjustments, Fox mentioned that "a few people are going ahead and creating an initial draft of Chapter 5’s maps, working on bullet patterns, etc."
Although the latest newsletter did not reveal a specific release date, it did offer fans a sneak peek at dialogue between Ralsei and Rouxls, a character description for Elnina, and a new item called GingerGuard. The three-year wait since Chapter 2's release initially disappointed many fans, but the game's expanding scope also sparked excitement. Fox further fueled this anticipation by stating, "Chapter 3 and 4 together are definitely longer than Chapter 1 & 2 combined."
As fans continue to wait for the full release, Fox remains optimistic about Deltarune’s development future. He assured that the release schedule for subsequent chapters will become smoother once Chapters 3 and 4 are out.
