Several Fallout developers, including New Vegas director Josh Sawyer, have expressed enthusiasm for a new Fallout game, but with a crucial caveat: creative freedom.
Creative Constraints are Key
In a YouTube Q&A, Sawyer stated his willingness to helm another Fallout title, but only if given sufficient creative leeway. He emphasized the importance of understanding project boundaries and the scope of permissible creative exploration. Without the freedom to pursue novel ideas, the project loses its appeal.
This sentiment is echoed by other developers. Fallout co-creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, while expressing interest in a Fallout: New Vegas remaster, highlighted the need for innovative elements in any new Fallout game. Cain explicitly stated that the allure of a new project hinges on its ability to offer something fresh and different. He questioned the motivation behind creating another Fallout game without a compelling new direction.
Obsidian's Perspective
Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart also voiced his desire to work on another Fallout game, but as of January 2023, confirmed that no such project was underway. Obsidian's current commitments to Avowed, Grounded, and Outer Worlds 2 leave little room for new game development in the immediate future. While Urquhart expressed hope for a future Fallout project before his retirement, the timing remains uncertain.
