A recent report from video game market research firm Niko Partners has sparked excitement in the gaming community by suggesting that Square Enix and Tencent are collaborating on a mobile version of the popular MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV. This revelation comes as part of a broader lineup of 15 games that have been approved for import and domestic publication in China by the National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA). Alongside the anticipated FFXIV mobile game, the list includes a mobile and PC version of Rainbow Six, two Marvel-themed games (Marvel Snap and Marvel Rivals), and a mobile adaptation of Dynasty Warriors 8.
While rumors about Tencent developing a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV began circulating last month, neither Tencent nor Square Enix have officially confirmed these plans. According to Daniel Ahmad from Niko Partners, the mobile game is expected to be a standalone MMORPG, distinct from its PC counterpart. However, Ahmad emphasized that this information stems largely from industry chatter and should be taken with a grain of salt until officially verified.
Tencent, a dominant force in the mobile gaming industry, appears to be aligning with Square Enix's recent strategy shift towards multiplatform releases. In May, Square Enix announced its intention to aggressively pursue a multiplatform approach for its flagship titles, including the Final Fantasy series. This potential partnership with Tencent for a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV could be a significant step in that direction.
