Rumors are swirling that the popular MMORPG, FFXIV, might be making its way to mobile devices. A gaming industry insider, Kurakasis, alleges Tencent Games and Square Enix are collaborating on a mobile port.
A History of Mobile Final Fantasy
While this isn't Square Enix's first foray into mobile Final Fantasy games, past attempts have yielded mixed results. Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, while decent, didn't resonate with all fans, and Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia was shut down last year. Therefore, adapting the complex FFXIV to mobile is a significant challenge.
Unverified Information
It's crucial to remember this is unconfirmed. Square Enix hasn't officially commented. However, past collaborations between Square Enix and Tencent hint at the possibility. In 2018, the two companies discussed joint content creation, and in 2021, then-president Yosuke Matsuda alluded to ongoing projects with Tencent. Thus, the rumor isn't entirely unfounded.
The leak from Kurakasis provides no timeframe, leaving the project's status uncertain. A formal announcement might be some time away.
The Mobile Challenge
Successfully translating FFXIV's intricate mechanics to a mobile platform without compromising its depth will be a considerable undertaking. A simplified, inferior version could disappoint fans.
