"Back to the Future Screenwriter: No Prequels, Spinoffs, or Sequels Ever"

by Leo May 17,2025

Bob Gale, the screenwriter behind the beloved *Back to the Future* trilogy, has firmly shut down any speculation about a revival of the franchise. Despite the buzz generated by the success of the *Cobra Kai* series, which followed up on the *Karate Kid* films, Gale remains steadfast in his stance against any new *Back to the Future* projects.

"I don't know why they keep talking about that!" Gale exclaimed in an interview with People magazine. "I mean, do they think that if they say it enough times, we're going to actually do it?" He reiterated that there will be no *Back to the Future 4*, no prequel, and no spinoff, emphasizing the trilogy's completeness. "It's just fine the way it is. It's not perfect, but as Bob Zemeckis used to say, 'It's perfect enough,'" Gale stated.

While Hollywood's power could theoretically push for a revival, Gale pointed out that executive producer Steven Spielberg would also need to approve any such project. "If the juggernaut of corporate America or corporate international mishigas says, 'If you don't agree to this, we're going to kill your children,' alright, well, no, we don't want our children killed,'" Gale quipped, highlighting the extreme conditions that would be necessary for a revival to happen. He added that Spielberg respects their decision to keep the franchise as is, much like his stance on not allowing another *E.T.*

Gale's sentiments align with his past statements on the topic. In February, he gave a blunt response to fans hoping for a *Back to the Future 4*: "People always say, 'When are you going to do Back to the Future 4?' And we say, 'F\*\*k you.'" His strong words underscore the firm stance against expanding the franchise.
