Harrison Ford, the iconic actor behind the beloved character Indiana Jones, has expressed his approval of Troy Baker's portrayal of Indy in the video game "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle." In an interview with The Wall Street Journal Magazine, Ford humorously remarked, "You don’t need artificial intelligence to steal my soul. You can already do it for nickels and dimes with good ideas and talent." He praised Baker, known for his role in "The Last of Us," for delivering a brilliant performance without relying on AI.
"Indiana Jones and the Great Circle," released in December, offers an "authentic" yet possibly non-canonical addition to the storied franchise. This release coincided with the 2023 film "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," which, unlike the game, did not receive favorable reviews. The positive reception of the game might encourage the franchise's creators to explore this new direction rather than having Ford reprise his role.
Ford, known for his roles in "Star Wars," "Indiana Jones," and soon in the Marvel universe, joins a chorus of creatives critical of AI's use in media. Notable figures like Tim Burton have called AI-generated art "very disturbing," while Nicolas Cage described it as a "dead end." Voice actors, too, have voiced their concerns; Ned Luke from "Grand Theft Auto 5" criticized a chatbot using his voice, and Doug Cockle, known for "The Witcher," told IGN that AI is "inevitable" but "dangerous," echoing Luke's sentiment that such technologies are "effectively robbing [voice actors] of income."
