NetEase's collectible card game, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, is shutting down in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania on October 29th, 2024. While the game will remain available in Asia and select MENA regions, this regional end-of-service (EOS) announcement marks the end of an era for many players.
Initially released in China in September 2021 to positive reception, the game's global launch in June 2022, following delays and pre-registrations, failed to achieve the same level of success.
The game's blend of Clash Royale-style gameplay and the Harry Potter universe initially captivated players with its card battles and wizard duels, effectively capturing the Hogwarts atmosphere. However, the game's popularity waned. Reddit discussions highlight player frustration with a shift towards pay-to-win mechanics, particularly following a rewards system rework that negatively impacted free-to-play players' progression. The game has already been removed from app stores in the affected regions.
Despite its initial promise, the game's inability to maintain player engagement led to this decision. For those in unaffected regions, the opportunity to experience Hogwarts life, attend classes, uncover secrets, and duel fellow students still remains.
