HBO's Harry Potter TV Series: Nick Frost on Hagrid Role

by Grace Jun 05,2026

Nick Frost has shared his early insights on taking over the iconic role of Hagrid in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter TV adaptation, emphasizing his desire to craft his own unique interpretation rather than imitate previous performances.

The beloved actor, known for Hot Fuzz and DreamWorks' How to Train Your Dragon live-action films, revealed he's already begun preparing for the massive role. Frost explained he's carefully considering how to honor the essence of Hagrid while bringing fresh elements to the character beloved by millions.

"Robbie Coltrane's performance is legendary - I could never attempt to recreate what he did," Frost told Collider. "My approach is less about being different and more about finding those small, authentic details that make the character feel alive."

The late Robbie Coltrane famously brought J.K. Rowling's gentle half-giant to life across all eight original films, becoming so integral to the character that Rowling herself said she often imagined Coltrane's voice while writing later books.

Frost's portrayal will span the entire decade-long series, with each season adapting one of the seven Harry Potter novels (The Deathly Hallows will be split into two seasons).

"I've already visited some incredible sets, and they're actually growing Hagrid's beard!" Frost excitedly told ScreenRant, though whether he meant prosthetic designers or an actual beard-growing process remains delightfully unclear.

The series recently announced its young leads: Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. "As a father myself, I'll naturally be protective of our young cast," Frost said. "That protective instinct is core to Hagrid's relationship with the trio - I can't wait to explore that dynamic."

Other confirmed cast members include John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape. The impressive lineup also features Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.

"To me, Hagrid is this wonderful contradiction - a giant with the heart of a child," Frost mused. "The show's seasonal format means I'll have so much more room to explore those layers. I want to capture his humor, his warmth, his fears, and that beautiful childlike quality he never loses."

Production on the highly anticipated series is set to begin later this year, with HBO targeting an early 2027 premiere date for the first season.
