by Oliver Apr 11,2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 continues the tradition of featuring a Zelda game, but with a twist we didn't see coming. Today's Nintendo Direct unveiled a new addition to the Hyrule Warriors series: a prequel to Tears of the Kingdom titled "Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment." Developed by Koei Tecmo, this exciting new title is slated for release this winter.

"Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment" dives into the lore of the ancient history featured in Tears of the Kingdom. Players will take on the roles of iconic characters such as Zelda, alongside Rauru, Sonia, and other Secret Stone holders. The game narrates Zelda's journey after she travels back in time, where she collaborates with the last Zonai, Rauru, his sister Mineru, and his wife Sonia, to combat Ganondorf and his formidable forces.

The trailer showcased the unique abilities of these champions, highlighting Mineru piloting her mech, Zelda's powerful magic, Rauru wielding an impressive sword-spear, and a brief look at other Sacred Stone wielders in action.

This marks the third installment in the Hyrule Warriors series, following the original "Hyrule Warriors" and "Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity." The latter served as a prequel to "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" and was celebrated for its unexpected storytelling. "Age of Calamity" earned a commendable 9/10 from us, praised as "a joy to play and discover" and "a blast from start to finish." It will be fascinating to see if "Age of Imprisonment" will similarly surprise us with its narrative twists.
