Kojima's Death Stranding 2 Casting Aims to Top Mikkelsen

by Ryan Mar 13,2025

The latest trailer for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach unveiled a wealth of new information, including a casting choice that's generated significant buzz: Luca Marinelli as Neil, a character whose resemblance to Solid Snake has sparked considerable online discussion. The selection process, as detailed by director Hideo Kojima, was particularly rigorous, aiming to surpass the impact of Mads Mikkelsen's Cliff from the first Death Stranding.

Kojima's X/Twitter post reveals a fascinating casting journey. He first discovered Marinelli through his performance in They Call Me Jeeg, and their connection deepened following the Japanese distribution of Martin Eden. Marinelli proactively reached out to Kojima, expressing his admiration for the director and his work on the Metal Gear series. After seeing Marinelli in The Old Guard, Kojima extended an offer, and subsequent conversations took place after Marinelli completed filming The Eight Mountains. The offer was accepted, and Marinelli further contributed by introducing Kojima to his wife, Alissa Jung, for the role of Lucy.

Kojima praised the actors' dedication, noting their exceptional performance capture work, even amidst the challenges of the pandemic and the absence of a complete script. The digitized results, as seen in the trailer, are a testament to their professionalism.

Marinelli's portrayal of Neil has become a highlight of the Death Stranding 2 trailer. The final scene, featuring Neil sporting a bandanna reminiscent of Solid Snake and commanding troops in a style similar to Cliff, has fueled much of the online speculation. This imagery clearly resonated with Kojima, who had previously commented on Marinelli's potential resemblance to Snake as far back as 2020.
