"Leaked Trailer Reveals Canceled Powerpuff Girls Live-Action Series"

by Aaliyah May 13,2025

In 2023, The CW's ambitious project to bring the beloved "Powerpuff Girls" into a live-action series for adult audiences met an unfortunate end. However, a recently surfaced teaser video on the YouTube channel "Lost Media Busters" has given fans a glimpse into what could have been. The video, which was quickly removed due to a copyright claim by Warner Bros. Entertainment, provided a three-and-a-half-minute look at the series' darker and more mature take on the iconic characters.

The trailer introduced viewers to an adult version of the Powerpuff Girls: Blossom, played by Chloe Bennet, is depicted as stressed and burnt out; Bubbles, portrayed by Dove Cameron, struggles with alcoholism; and Buttercup, played by Yana Perrault, is shown as rebellious and challenging gender norms. The plot thickens as the trio inadvertently causes the death of a human named Mojo and subsequently flees Townsville. Years later, they return to visit their father, Professor Utonium, portrayed by Donald Faison, only to confront Mojo's grown son, Jojo, who has become the mayor and is bent on revenge against them. The trailer includes edgy humor, such as references to juggalos and provocative language.

The CW has confirmed to Variety that the leaked footage is indeed authentic, though it was never meant for public viewing. The live-action series was announced back in 2020 but faced numerous challenges, leading to its cancellation in 2023. One significant hurdle was the unsuccessful initial pilot, which CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz described as a "miss." Despite believing in the cast and the creative team, including writers Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier, and producers Greg Berlanti and Warner Studios, the pilot was deemed too campy and not sufficiently grounded in reality.

Pedowitz emphasized the learning process involved in pilot testing, stating, "The reason you do pilots is because sometimes things miss, and this was just a miss... But because we see there’s enough elements in there, we wanted to give it another shot." Unfortunately, the project did not move forward, leaving fans to wonder what might have been with this intriguing, albeit controversial, take on the Powerpuff Girls.
