Live-Action Street Fighter Movie Finds a New Director

by Lucas Feb 26,2025

Legendary Entertainment's upcoming Street Fighter film adaptation has found its director: Kitao Sakurai, the creative force behind the comedic masterpiece, The Eric Andre Show. This news, reported by The Hollywood Reporter, signals a potentially unique approach to the iconic fighting game franchise.

Capcom's significant involvement ensures the film will stay true to the game's spirit, and the March 20, 2026 release date is already set. This new adaptation follows previous attempts, most notably the 1994 film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, a cult classic despite mixed initial critical reception.

While casting remains unannounced, fans can anticipate seeing their favorite Street Fighter characters brought to life. The project initially had Danny and Michael Philippou (directors of Talk to Me) attached, but they left last summer. Sakurai's selection suggests a shift towards a potentially more absurdist tone, a direction that could resonate well with the game's more cartoonish aspects.

In the meantime, fans can enjoy the latest installment in the Street Fighter franchise, Street Fighter 6, recently enhanced with the addition of Mai Shiranui. Read our comprehensive review of Street Fighter 6 for a deeper dive.
