Tidepool Games has released a thrilling new game on Android that blends the fast-paced action of pixel art with a 'snakelike' roguelike experience. Dubbed MageTrain, this game will instantly remind fans of Nimble Quest due to its clear inspiration from the classic.
What’s MageTrain Like?
MageTrain combines elements of Snake, auto-battlers, and roguelikes into a unique gameplay experience. You control a line of heroes that follow behind you, much like a snake, automatically attacking as you navigate through an arena. Your key task is to strategically position your heroes to avoid crashing into enemies or obstacles. The placement of each hero in the train affects their abilities, making it crucial to manage who leads and who supports.
At launch, MageTrain features nine heroes, including one that throws birds, each with varying skills based on their position in the line. As you progress, you'll navigate through eight distinct dungeons, battle against 28 different enemy types, and unlock 30 skills to enhance your team. Gold and power-ups are scattered throughout, adding layers of strategy to your runs.
The roguelike nature of MageTrain means each playthrough is unique. You'll encounter branching paths, make choices on upgrades, and aim to survive as long as possible. This structure is reminiscent of games like Slay the Spire or FTL, where there are no fixed levels, and if you fail, you start over from the beginning.
It Isn’t Slow-Paced
What makes MageTrain engaging is the continuous improvement you experience with each run, even when you don't succeed. You learn when to play defensively, when to launch a full offensive, and when to focus on surviving just a bit longer.
MageTrain is now available on Android and is free to play. Don't miss out—head over to the Google Play Store to try it out.
