Nintendo has provided the first detailed look at a Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge, just ahead of the console's highly anticipated launch next month. In a recent video released through the Nintendo Today app, we got a glimpse of the official Switch 2 carry case, designed to safely store up to six cartridges from both the original Nintendo Switch and the new Switch 2.
As previously confirmed, the Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same size and shape as their predecessors, ensuring that the new console can seamlessly play games from both generations with a single cartridge slot. However, a notable distinction is the color of the new cartridges. Switch 2 cartridges are universally red, a feature highlighted not only in the Mario Kart World cartridge showcased in the video but across all titles. The cartridges also feature a printed design sticker with the Switch 2 logo, differentiating them from the original Switch cartridges. The official Switch 2 carrying case is designed to accommodate the console with attached Joy-Con 2, six cartridges, and two Joy-Con 2 straps. Interestingly, the new cartridges retain the same foul-tasting coating as their predecessors, a safety measure to prevent accidental ingestion.
"We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption," explained Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta in a previous interview with GameSpot. "We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."
