The Nintendo Switch 2 reveal this morning lends significant credence to earlier rumors about Joy-Con mouse functionality.
The reveal trailer showcased detached Joy-Cons placed attachment-side down on a surface, connecting to flat-bottomed connectors. These then moved across the surface like a mouse on a mousepad. A possible slider pad is visible on one connector, further supporting the theory.
Pre-reveal speculation centered on a sensor inside the Joy-Cons, similar to those in computer mice. However, Nintendo hasn't officially confirmed this feature or its implications. Fans envision applications in games like Civilization, traditionally better suited to mouse and keyboard controls. Others anticipate innovative uses within Nintendo's first-party titles. The possibilities remain open.
While much about potential Switch 2 mouse support (and the purpose of a new Joy-Con button) remains unknown, we have confirmed details: the console's name (Nintendo Switch 2), its 2025 release, and an upcoming Mario Kart title. Backward compatibility with the original Switch is assured, with further software announcements slated for an April Direct. Stay updated on all our Nintendo Switch 2 coverage here.
