Nintendo has filed a patent indicating the upcoming Switch 2 may feature reversible Joy-Con controllers that can attach upside down.
As reported by VGC, the patent describes gyroscopic functionality similar to smartphones' screen rotation capabilities. The console will automatically adjust its display orientation regardless of controller positioning.
The redesigned Joy-Cons reportedly use magnetic attachment technology rather than the original Switch's rail system, enabling flexible placement on either side of the console.
This innovative design provides players with customizable button positioning and headphone jack placement. If implemented, the versatile controller orientation could enable novel gameplay possibilities.
"Players can mount controllers on either side," the patent explains. "The system supports inverted device orientation while automatically repositioning interface elements and maintaining headphone jack functionality."
Nintendo will likely showcase this feature during their upcoming Nintendo Direct presentation scheduled for April 2 at 6am PT/9am ET/2pm UK time.
Industry speculation points to a Switch 2 release between June and September, supported by ongoing hands-on events and publisher Nacon's statement about launching Greedfall 2 before September.
Following Nintendo's January teaser trailer confirming backward compatibility and an additional USB-C port, many details remain undisclosed - including the purpose of the mysterious new Joy-Con button that sparked the popular "mouse mode" theory.
