Nintendo Switch 2 Tariff Delays Pre-Orders in Canada

by Joshua Apr 16,2025

Gamers worldwide let out a collective groan last week when the Nintendo Switch 2 preorder date shifted from April 9 to an uncertain "whenever" due to import tariffs introduced by President Trump, which threw financial markets into turmoil. The ripple effect has crossed borders, with Nintendo Canada confirming that preorders in their region are also on hold. So, if you were planning to snag a preorder through a relative in Winnipeg, you're out of luck.

"Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in Canada will not start on April 9, 2025, to align with the timing of pre-orders to be determined in the U.S.," Nintendo of Canada announced in a statement to the Canadian tech site MobileSyrup.

"Nintendo will provide updated information at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025, remains unchanged."

Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025, as Nintendo assesses the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025, remains unchanged.

With the original preorder launch date just around the corner, there's still no clarity on when eager fans can start frantically refreshing their browsers and checking their credit card details, leaving gamers in a state of limbo and worried about potential price hikes beyond the initially announced $449.99.

Meanwhile, in other parts of the world, Nintendo Switch 2 preorders have already kicked off in the UK today. Smaller retailers like EE, GAME, and Smyths saw their stock vanish quickly, with scalpers jumping onto eBay to resell preorders for £500 ($639) or more, well above the retail price of £395.99 ($506).
