Overwatch 2's Triumphant Return to China: February 19 Launch and January 8 Tech Test
After a two-year absence, Overwatch 2 is set to relaunch in China on February 19th, preceded by a technical test commencing January 8th. This marks the end of a significant period where Chinese players missed 12 seasons of content.
The hiatus stemmed from the termination of Blizzard's contract with NetEase in January 2023, resulting in the unavailability of numerous Blizzard titles in China. However, a renewed partnership in April 2024 paved the way for the game's return.
The technical test (January 8th-15th) will allow Chinese players to experience the full roster of 42 heroes, including the newest additions like Hazard, and revisit the classic 6v6 game mode. The official launch on February 19th coincides with the start of Overwatch 2 Season 15.
Beyond the game's return, Blizzard is also bringing Overwatch esports back to China in 2025 with the Overwatch Championship Series, featuring a dedicated China region. The inaugural live event will be held in Hangzhou, signifying the game's grand comeback.
Chinese players will have a substantial amount of catching up to do, having missed six new heroes (Lifeweaver, Illari, Mauga, Venture, Juno, and Hazard), new game modes (Flashpoint and Clash), maps (Antarctic Peninsula, Samoa, and Runasapi), story missions (Invasion), and numerous hero reworks and balance changes.
While the 2025 Lunar New Year event may conclude shortly before the game's return, Blizzard may consider a follow-up event to ensure Chinese players can fully participate in the festivities within the game.
