Following its Xbox and PC releases, Palworld finally arrived on PlayStation consoles, as revealed during the September 2024 PlayStation State of Play. However, a significant exception exists: the PS5 release is currently unavailable in Japan.
Palworld's PlayStation 5 Launch Delayed Indefinitely in Japan
Palworld's PlayStation Debut Showcased at State of Play
The PlayStation State of Play in September 2024 announced Palworld's PS5 launch. Sony even showcased a trailer featuring a Palworld character sporting gear inspired by Aloy from Horizon Forbidden West.
Despite the global launch, Japanese PlayStation players are unable to access the game. This delay stems from a legal battle between Nintendo and Pokémon against Pocketpair, Palworld's developer, over alleged patent infringement.
Uncertain Future for Palworld's PS5 Japan Release
Palworld's Japanese Twitter (X) account addressed the situation, confirming the PS5 version's release in 68 countries and regions, while apologizing for the Japanese delay and stating that a release date remains undetermined. The statement emphasizes their commitment to bringing the game to all PS5 users as soon as possible.
While Pocketpair hasn't explicitly stated the reason for the delay, the ongoing legal proceedings in Japan are widely considered the cause. Nintendo's recent lawsuit filed in Tokyo District Court, seeking an injunction and damages, casts a shadow over Palworld's future in Japan. A granted injunction could force Pocketpair to cease Palworld operations, potentially leading to the game's removal.
