Master the Path of Exile 2 Mercenary: A Leveling Guide

The Mercenary is one of the easiest classes to level in Path of Exile 2. Unlike some classes that struggle with large groups of enemies or require close-range combat, the Mercenary possesses versatile tools for various combat scenarios. However, maximizing its potential requires a strategic approach. This guide outlines optimal skills, support gems, passive skill tree nodes, and item choices for a smooth leveling experience.

Optimal Skills and Support Gems

Skill Gem Table

Early-game success hinges on Fragmentation Shot and Permafrost Shot. Fragmentation Shot excels in close-quarters combat, especially with support gems boosting stun damage. Permafrost Shot's freezing effect enhances Fragmentation Shot's damage by shattering frozen enemies.

The late-game meta shifts dramatically with the acquisition of powerful grenades and Explosive Shot.

Skill Gem Useful Support Gems
Explosive Shot Ignition, Magnified Effect, Pierce
Gas Grenade Scattershot, Fire Penetration, Inspiration
Ripwire Ballista Ruthless
Explosive Grenade Fire Infusion, Primal Armament, Magnified Effect
Oil Grenade Ignition, Magnified Effect
Flash Grenade Overpower
Galvanic Shards Lightning Infusion, Pierce
Glacial Bolt Fortress
Herald of Ash Clarity, Vitality

Gas Grenade poisons a wide area and detonates with a Detonation skill. Explosive Grenades explode after a delay or detonation. Explosive Shot detonates these grenades, creating massive AoE damage. Ripwire Ballista distracts enemies, while Glacial Bolt offers crowd control. Oil Grenade is situationally useful, but Gas Grenade generally surpasses it. Galvanic Shards provides effective crowd control. Herald of Ash ignites nearby enemies upon an enemy's death based on overkill damage.

Prioritize Level 1 or 2 support gems readily available before Act 3. Use Lesser Jeweller's Orbs to add support gem sockets to Explosive Grenade, Explosive Shot, and Gas Grenade.

Essential Passive Skill Tree Nodes

Passive Skill Tree Nodes

Focus on three key passive skills: Cluster Bombs, Repeating Explosives, and Iron Reflexes. Cluster Bombs increases grenade projectile count, while Repeating Explosives adds a chance for double explosions. Iron Reflexes converts evasion to armor, mitigating the Sorcery Ward Ascendancy skill's armor/evasion reduction.

Prioritize Cooldown Reduction, Projectile & Grenade Damage, and Area of Effect for enhanced grenade power. Crossbow-related nodes and Armor/Evasion nodes are secondary, prioritizing them only if necessary.

Itemization and Stat Priorities

Recommended Items

Continuously upgrade your gear, focusing on powerful modifiers. Crossbow upgrades yield the most significant power increase.

Prioritize these stats:

  • Dexterity
  • Strength
  • Armor
  • Evasion
  • All Elemental Resistances (except Chaos)
  • Increased Physical Damage
  • Increased Elemental OR Fire Damage
  • Attack Speed
  • Mana On Kill OR Hit
  • Life on Kill OR Hit
  • Rarity of Items Found
  • Movement Speed

Bombard Crossbows provide an extra grenade projectile, significantly boosting damage. Actively seek and utilize them.
