This latest issue follows the successful releases of Godzilla vs. Fantastic Four #1 in March and Godzilla vs. Hulk #1 in April. Set in a nostalgic throwback to the '80s, Godzilla vs. Spider-Man #1 picks up the narrative shortly after the events of Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars in 1984. Peter Parker, fresh from his adventures on Battleworld, is still adjusting to the alien symbiote costume when he faces the monumental challenge of protecting his city from Godzilla's destructive path.
The creative team behind Godzilla vs. Spider-Man #1 includes writer Joe Kelly, who is also steering the upcoming relaunch of The Amazing Spider-Man series, and artist Nick Bradshaw, known for his work on Wolverine and the X-Men. The cover art features contributions from Bradshaw, Lee Garbett, and Greg Land.
Joe Kelly expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "The second I heard that there was going to be a Godzilla x Spidey crossover set in the ‘80s, I almost leapt across the table to claim it. This book is a chance to go nuts and have a blast with two iconic characters and channel the chaos of the time period that I was actively collecting Spider-Man. Nick Bradshaw really captures the absurdity of the concept and the vibe I was going for, while at the same time giving Godzilla and Spidey (in his perfectly-normal-nothing-weird-here-black suit!) the prestige and gravity they deserve. It's a love letter served with an earth-shattering roar!”
While this isn't the first instance of Godzilla clashing with Western superheroes—DC's Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong being a recent example—Marvel's series zeroes in on the classic Toho Godzilla, distinct from the MonsterVerse versions seen in DC's crossover.
This announcement also follows the reveal of IDW's Godzilla vs. Los Angeles #1, an anthology special aimed at supporting wildfire relief through its proceeds.
