PS5 Disc Drive Shortage Persists: Scalpers and High Demand Fuel the Crisis
Since the launch of the PS5 Pro, a persistent shortage of standalone PlayStation 5 disc drives has frustrated gamers. The issue stems from the PS5 Pro's design: released in 2024, this upgraded console omits a built-in disc drive, making the previously-released external drive a necessary accessory for those wanting to play physical games.
This unexpected surge in demand, coupled with scalpers aggressively acquiring and reselling drives at inflated prices, has left both the US and UK PS Direct stores consistently out of stock. While some third-party retailers like Best Buy and Target occasionally receive limited shipments, these are quickly depleted, leaving many gamers empty-handed.
Sony's silence on the matter is notable, especially considering the company's proactive approach to PS5 production during the 2020 pandemic. The added cost of the external drive ($80 from official sources) further exacerbates the problem, particularly when combined with the already high price of the PS5 Pro.
The situation remains unresolved. The ongoing shortage, fueled by high demand and scalping activities, forces many PlayStation fans to endure extended waits for the availability of the PS5 disc drive. A resolution is not currently in sight.
