Resident Evil 4 Remake Surpasses 9 Million Copies Sold: Capcom Celebrates a Milestone
Capcom's Resident Evil 4 remake continues its phenomenal success, recently surpassing 9 million units sold worldwide. This achievement follows the game's release in March 2023 and subsequent releases like the Gold Edition (February 2023) and an iOS version (late 2023), significantly boosting sales figures. The game's rapid sales trajectory is noteworthy, especially considering it recently passed the 8 million mark.
The remake, starring Leon S. Kennedy in his mission to rescue the President's daughter, Ashley Graham, from a fanatical cult, represents a significant shift in the series' gameplay. While retaining its horror elements, the title leans more heavily into action-oriented mechanics, marking a departure from its survival horror roots.
Capcom's official Twitter account, CapcomDev1, commemorated the milestone with celebratory artwork depicting beloved characters like Ada Wong, Krauser, and Saddler enjoying a game of bingo. A recent update further enhanced the experience for PS5 Pro users.
A Record-Breaking Success
According to Alex Aniel, author of the Resident Evil fan book Itchy, Tasty: An Unofficial History of Resident Evil, Resident Evil 4 has become the fastest-selling title in the franchise. This underscores its exceptional performance, particularly when compared to Resident Evil Village, which reached only 500,000 copies sold within its eighth quarter.
Anticipation for Future Remakes
Given the immense success of the Resident Evil 4 remake, fans are eagerly anticipating Capcom's next move. A remake of Resident Evil 5 is a highly sought-after prospect, especially considering the relatively short timeframe between the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes. However, other entries in the series, such as Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil CODE: Veronica, also hold significant potential for modern reimaginings, offering compelling narrative connections to the overall storyline. Naturally, the announcement of a Resident Evil 9 would also be met with widespread excitement.
