Roia Is the Latest Tranquil Mobile Game from Award-Winning Indie Studio Emoak

by Eleanor Jan 07,2025

Mobile gaming's innovative spirit shines brightly in Roia, a captivating puzzle-adventure that masterfully utilizes the unique characteristics of smartphones. Developed by Emoak, the studio behind acclaimed titles like Paper Climb and Lyxo, Roia offers a refreshing take on game design.

The core gameplay revolves around guiding a river from mountaintop to sea. Players sculpt the landscape with their fingers, creating a path for the cascading water. This simple premise belies a deeply personal story. Inspired by childhood memories of creekside adventures with his grandfather, lead designer Tobias Sturn poured his heart into Roia, a game dedicated to his late grandfather.

Roia transcends simple categorization. While challenges exist, the game prioritizes a relaxing, meditative experience. Players journey through beautifully rendered forests, meadows, and villages, guided by a helpful white bird. The game's aesthetic echoes the elegant simplicity of Monument Valley, complemented by a moving soundtrack composed by Johannes Johannson (also known for his work on Emoak's Lyxo).

Roia is available now on the Google Play Store and App Store for $2.99.
