Ryan Reynolds Explains Deadpool's Solo Path, Avoiding Avengers and X-Men

by Audrey May 12,2025

Ryan Reynolds has cast doubt on the prospects of Deadpool joining either the Avengers or the X-Men, suggesting that such a move would signal the end of the character's journey. In his own words, Reynolds stated, "If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we're at the end. That's wish fulfillment, and you can't give him that." This comes in the wake of the massive success of Deadpool & Wolverine, where Deadpool's desire to join the Avengers was a central plot point, fueling speculation that Marvel Studios might want to include the 'Merc with a Mouth' in their next big Avengers project, Avengers: Doomsday.

The cast reveal for Avengers: Doomsday last month featured a strong presence of veteran X-Men actors, including Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden. This lineup has led to speculation that the film might be setting up for an Avengers vs. X-Men storyline. Grammer, who played Beast in the Fox X-Men franchise, has already debuted in the MCU via The Marvels' post-credits scene. Stewart, known for his role as Charles Xavier/Professor X, briefly appeared in the MCU in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as part of the Illuminati. McKellen, who portrayed Magneto, along with Cumming (Nightcrawler), Romijn (Mystique), and Marsden (Cyclops), are yet to make their MCU debut.

Despite the absence of Reynolds' name from the confirmed cast list for Avengers: Doomsday, which did include Channing Tatum reprising his role as Gambit from Deadpool & Wolverine, Reynolds hinted at a potential surprise cameo for Deadpool. He cited the positive reception to Wesley Snipes' cameo as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine as a model for how Deadpool could appear in future projects.

As for Deadpool's future, Reynolds is currently working on a new project that he describes as involving an "ensemble," though he remained tight-lipped about the details. This could suggest another film in the vein of Deadpool & Wolverine, with a focus on cameos and ensemble storytelling. Potential characters for inclusion might be Snipes' Blade, Tatum's Gambit, Jennifer Garner's Elektra, and Dafne Keen's Laura Kinney/X-23, all of whom appeared in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Regarding Avengers: Doomsday, beyond the cast announcement, details remain sparse. Anthony Mackie, set to reprise his role as Sam Wilson/Captain America, expressed optimism about the film, suggesting it will recapture the classic Marvel feel. Other cast members, including Paul Rudd as Ant-Man and Joseph Quinn as the Human Torch, have also shared their excitement. A recent set photo leak has sparked discussions among fans, with some worrying about potential negative implications for the X-Men.

Speculation about Oscar Isaac appearing as Moon Knight in Avengers: Doomsday has been fueled by his withdrawal from the Star Wars Celebration due to scheduling conflicts. Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige has confirmed that the announced cast for Avengers: Doomsday is not exhaustive, hinting at more surprises to come.
