by Claire May 12,2025

Today, Samsung is offering a fantastic deal on their latest SSD, the Samsung 990 Evo Plus PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe solid state drive. Gamers and tech enthusiasts can grab the 2TB model for just $129.99 or opt for the even better value 4TB model at $249.99. These prices represent a $40-$70 saving compared to the Samsung 990 Pro, and most gamers won't notice any difference in performance between the two.

The Samsung 990 Evo Plus is a stellar choice for both gaming PCs and PlayStation 5 consoles. It surpasses Sony's minimum speed recommendations for the PS5, with impressive sequential read speeds up to 7,250MB/s and write speeds up to 6,300MB/s. While it's not as fast as the 990 Pro, it's a significant upgrade over the non-Pro 990 Evo. The key difference is that the 990 Evo Plus is a DRAM-less drive, but this doesn't impact PS5 performance. For gaming PCs, it uses HMB (host memory buffer) to compensate for the lack of DRAM, utilizing a negligible amount of your system's RAM. Gamers won't notice any performance difference between the 990 Evo Plus and the 990 Pro.

The Samsung 990 Evo Plus does not come with a preinstalled heatsink. However, its new single-sided design is power-efficient and generates less heat than older SSDs. This means it should work perfectly in a PS5 without thermal throttling, though adding a heatsink for peace of mind is an option, costing an extra $7.
