While Scarlett Johansson remains a steadfast supporter of Marvel, her return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe seems unlikely anytime soon. The Black Widow star recently requested removal of her executive producer credit from Thunderbolts*, clarifying she wasn't involved in the film's production.
"I asked to have my credit removed because I wasn't involved," Johansson explained during a conversation with Thunderbolts* co-star David Harbour for Interview Magazine. The revelation came when Harbour noted her producer credit during their discussion about the film's release day.
Harbour jokingly questioned, "You hated the film that much?" To which Johansson quickly responded: "No, you're just wanting that to be the case," while emphasizing her pride in the creative team. Current IMDB listings confirm her credit has indeed been removed.
Despite stepping back from acting roles, Johansson expressed interest in potential MCU directing opportunities during her Deadline interview. Reflecting on her Black Widow producing experience, she explained:
"There's ways to maintain human connection themes within gigantic universes... It would be fun." Her comments suggest creative avenues beyond acting still appeal to her.
The Thunderbolts* marketing campaign made waves by rebranding the film as New Avengers post-release, deliberately blurring fiction and reality regarding superhero team dynamics. The film serves as Phase 6's precursor to The Fantastic Four: First Steps arriving in July.
