Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nears Release, Writer Says

by Jack May 13,2025

Exciting news for Star Wars fans! Shawn Levy, the acclaimed director behind Deadpool & Wolverine, is still at the helm of an upcoming Star Wars movie, and we have a fresh update from the project's writer, Jonathan Tropper. "I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant about the eagerly awaited film. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

While the details of Levy's Star Wars movie remain largely under wraps, we do know it's set to take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has clarified its timeline, stating, "That’s also in the future... It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This makes it the first film to explore the post-Rise of Skywalker era.

Kennedy also confirmed in the same interview that Levy's film will follow the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026. Additionally, it's been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in this mysterious new venture.

With Tropper's optimistic comments, it seems that progress is being made on Levy's film. However, fans will need to exercise patience as the earliest possible release window is the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027.

It's worth noting that Disney has not released a Star Wars film since the controversial Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. During this period, several projects have been canceled, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Moreover, a Star Wars movie initially slated for a late 2026 release was recently removed from Disney's calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new Star Wars feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set in his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The latter will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey post-The Rise of Skywalker.

The Obaid-Chinoy project has experienced some shifts, with screenwriter Steven Knight departing after initially taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these changes, Rey remains a focal point for Disney's future Star Wars projects, as reported by THR.

Disney's Star Wars plans extend even further. X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy that will not continue the Skywalker Saga, contrary to earlier reports.

The next Star Wars content to grace your screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a thrilling triple premiere episode.
