Shuttered MOBA Heroes of Newerth Might Be Coming Back

Summary

  • Hints of a Heroes of Newerth comeback surfaced on social media after the game's 2022 shutdown.
  • Fan speculation about a revival ignited following developer posts on Twitter.
  • Significant player interest in Heroes of Newerth persists, fueling anticipation for updates regarding its potential return.

The classic MOBA, Heroes of Newerth, shut down in 2022, may be staging a comeback. While unconfirmed, recent activity on the game's dormant social media accounts—silent for over three years—suggests a potential announcement is brewing. This follows the developer, Garena, restarting activity after a long hiatus. This could signal a return for this popular competitor to League of Legends and Dota 2.

The success of the Warcraft 3 mod, Dota, sparked a wave of similar games. The core MOBA concept—two teams battling to destroy each other's base—quickly captivated gamers. League of Legends, Dota 2, Heroes of the Storm, and Heroes of Newerth emerged as leading MOBAs in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Unfortunately, Heroes of Newerth ultimately couldn't maintain its position and closed its servers in 2022. However, recent developments hint at a possible resurgence.

Personally, in MOBAs, I favor the top/off-lane bruiser role. Aatrox and Mordekaiser in League of Legends, and Axe, Sven, or Tidehunter in Dota 2 are among my favorites. If that role is unavailable, I'm adaptable, preferring ranged carry over mid or support.

The first clue emerged from a recent social media post. The official Twitter account's last post, in December 2021, announced Heroes of Newerth's closure. After a three-year silence, a "Happy NEW Year" message (with "NEW" capitalized) appeared on January 1st. Furthermore, the Heroes of Newerth website subtly changed, now displaying a silhouetted logo with surrounding particles.

Heroes of Newerth's Recent Social Media Activity Could Hint at a Comeback

This wasn't a solitary event; it quickly captured players' attention. Nostalgia flooded in, with many recalling fond memories. Speculation of a comeback intensified, with comments like, "Don't give me hope." Adding fuel to the fire, a picture of a large cracking egg was posted on January 6th. This sparked further theories, ranging from importing HoN heroes into Dota 2 to the development of a mobile version.

The renewed social media activity has undeniably excited players, demonstrating enduring interest in the game. While the developer's intentions remain unclear, the potential return of Heroes of Newerth promises an intriguing challenge to existing top MOBA titles.
