Squad Busters is celebrating its first anniversary with the release of its biggest update yet, version 2.0, set to launch on May 13th. Since its debut in 2024, the game has struggled to capture the audience that Supercell hoped for. With the 2.0 update, the developers are aiming to turn things around and revitalize the game's appeal.
This Isn’t Just a Tweak or Two
Squad Busters 2.0 represents a significant overhaul, essentially rebooting the game. The core mechanics, including battle systems and victory conditions, are being transformed. One of the most notable changes is the introduction of Heroes, which players must select to lead their squads. These Heroes, drawn from existing characters, are central to the gameplay; if your Hero is defeated, you lose the match.
Combat mechanics have also been revamped. Players no longer need to stop moving to engage in combat; instead, movement and fighting are seamlessly integrated, making battles more dynamic, aggressive, and chaotic. The victory conditions have shifted as well—from eliminating all opponents to focusing solely on defeating the enemy Hero. This change has sparked some debate among players, with some viewing it as a move toward a Brawl Stars-like experience with additional elements.
Squad Busters 2.0 Is Dumping a Lot of Old Features
As part of the overhaul, several game modes are being removed, including Doppelgangers, Double Trouble, Epic Overload, Loot Machines, and Hatchling Herder. Additionally, certain skins and progression systems are being phased out. To compensate for these changes, Supercell plans to distribute Hero Points and other in-game items to players.

The urgency behind these changes is clear: Squad Busters has not yet reached the popularity levels of Supercell's other hits like Clash of Clans or Brawl Stars. With the first anniversary approaching on May 29th, Supercell is making a bold move to reignite interest in the game. To celebrate, they are introducing daily piñata events, which will offer players the chance to unlock a new Hero, Mortis.
