Shawn Levy, director of Deadpool and Wolverine, is reportedly on the verge of joining the Star Wars universe, bringing Ryan Gosling along for the ride.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Levy's Star Wars project is in advanced negotiations with Gosling to take a leading role. Levy has been developing this film since 2022, with a script finalized last year. He's once again collaborating with Jonathan Tropper, screenwriter for This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project, both Levy-directed films.
Plot details remain tightly under wraps, with no confirmation on Gosling's character or the film's temporal setting within the Star Wars timeline. However, it's confirmed to be separate from the Skywalker Saga. The Hollywood Reporter also indicates it's intended as a standalone film, rather than the start of a trilogy.

Gosling's potential involvement has reportedly accelerated the project's timeline. While Levy was previously attached to direct a boy band movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, THR suggests that Gosling's confirmation would prioritize the Star Wars film, pushing its production start to fall of this year.
The Star Wars franchise is currently undergoing a transition. Following the cancellation of The Acolyte, Disney+ recently concluded its latest series, Skeleton Crew. On the film front, Dave Filoni's Mandalorian and Grogu movie completed filming in December, slated for release on May 22, 2026. A new trilogy focusing on Daisy Ridley's Rey is also in the works.
A release date for Levy's Star Wars film remains unannounced, pending its confirmation for production this year. For a comprehensive overview of upcoming Star Wars content, see our 2025 preview.
