Quick Links

The Sega Master System, a classic 8-bit console, boasts a library of fantastic games. The Steam Deck, combined with EmuDeck, provides a powerful platform for enjoying these titles.

Updated January 15, 2024, to include Decky Loader and Power Tools for enhanced performance and post-update troubleshooting.

Before You Begin

Prior to installation:

  • Ensure your Steam Deck is charged or plugged in.
  • A high-speed microSD card (or external HDD, sacrificing portability) is required, formatted within the Steam Deck.
  • A keyboard and mouse are recommended for easier navigation. Alternatively, use the on-screen keyboard (Steam + X) and trackpads.

Enable Developer Mode

Essential for smooth emulator operation:

  • Access the Steam menu, then System > System Settings.
  • Enable Developer Mode.
  • Access the Developer menu (bottom of the access panel).
  • Enable CEF Remote Debugging under Miscellaneous.
  • Restart your Steam Deck. (Note: CEF Remote Debugging may require re-enabling after updates.)

Transferring Master System ROMs

Addressing Missing Artwork

Missing or incorrect artwork can be fixed:

  • Click "Fix" on the cover frame. Steam ROM Manager will attempt automatic retrieval.
  • If needed, manually search for and select the correct artwork, then save.

Uploading Artwork

For artwork not found automatically:

  • Save the artwork to the Steam Deck's Pictures folder.
  • Click "Upload" on the cover frame.
  • Select the artwork, save, and verify its display.
  • Click "Save to Steam."

Playing Master System Games

- In Gaming Mode, access your Steam Library.

  • Select the "Collections" tab (R1 button).
  • Choose your Sega Master System collection and launch a game.

Performance Optimization

For smoother gameplay:
