I'll be honest with you: George Miller is my favorite director. He’s the genius behind two of my favorite movie franchises: Mad Max and Happy Feet (yes, there was a Happy Feet sequel—give it a look). Sorry, I get carried away with Happy Feet.
In truth, the Mad Max films fuse the raw energy of early '80s action tropes with a surreal vision of post-apocalyptic Australia. After releasing three movies between 1979 and 1985, it seemed Mad Max would stay a trilogy and a relic of a bygone era. Then, after that detour with Happy Feet, Miller unexpectedly returned to the franchise that launched his career.
With Tom Hardy stepping into the iconic role once played by Mel Gibson, Mad Max: Fury Road debuted in 2015 to widespread critical praise, eventually winning six Academy Awards. While the latest film, Furiosa, didn’t quite match its box office triumph, I still firmly believe Mad Max ranks among the greatest action franchises of all time.

If you want to watch the Mad Max films in chronological order, you could follow the original trilogy’s release order, then insert Furiosa before Fury Road:

That said, I think Furiosa works best as the final film in your marathon. Like most great prequels, its most powerful moments hit harder when you already know the characters from Fury Road.
Future Mad Max Movies
George Miller previously said the future of the Mad Max franchise hinged on Furiosa’s success. Unfortunately, the prequel didn’t become a box office phenomenon. Still, the fact that he said so suggests he still has stories to tell in this world.That possibility gained credibility when Deadline reported the director “has a script” for another Mad Max film—likely referring to The Wasteland, a rumored sequel to Fury Road. Yet Miller has other projects on his plate, and another Mad Max movie would require studios to back what would almost certainly be another huge-budget undertaking. They should. But it probably won’t happen anytime soon.
