Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Double Dose of Ninja Action Announced at Xbox Developer Direct 2025

Ninja Gaiden 4 Reveal

Team Ninja declared 2025 "The Year of the Ninja," unveiling not one, but two exciting titles during the Xbox Developer Direct 2025: Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. This surprise announcement marks a significant milestone for the franchise, celebrating Team Ninja's 30th anniversary. Producer Fumihiko Yasuda expressed his enthusiasm, anticipating fans' excitement for the series' evolution.

Developed collaboratively by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, Ninja Gaiden 4 is the long-awaited mainline sequel, arriving thirteen years after Ninja Gaiden 3. True to the series' legacy, it promises intensely challenging yet deeply rewarding gameplay. The Xbox reveal is unsurprising, given the historical collaboration between Team Ninja and Xbox, with past titles like Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden 2 (published by Microsoft Game Studios) having strong ties to the platform.

A New Ninja Takes Center Stage

New Protagonist Yakumo

Ninja Gaiden 4 introduces Yakumo, a young ninja from the rival Raven clan, striving to become a Master Ninja. PlatinumGames' Art Director, Tomoko Nishii, described the design vision for Yakumo: "to be someone who can stand alongside Ryu, the pinnacle of what it means to be a ninja." Yuji Nakao, Producer and Director from PlatinumGames, explained the reasoning behind the new protagonist: "Since it’s been a while since the last game, we wanted a new hero to make the series more approachable for new players. Of course, we also wanted long-time fans to enjoy the game, so Ryu Hayabusa plays a significant role in the story, serving as a major challenge and growth milestone for Yakumo." Rest assured, Ryu Hayabusa remains a pivotal figure, playable and a formidable opponent for Yakumo.

Revitalized Combat

New Combat Style

Expect breakneck-speed combat with signature Ninja Gaiden brutality. Yakumo's introduction brings a new fighting style: the Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style, complementing the Raven Style. Team Ninja's Masazaku Hirayama assures fans that while distinct from Ryu's style, "the action will feel right at home in the Ninja Gaiden series." Nakao highlights the blend of classic Ninja Gaiden challenge and PlatinumGames' dynamic action. Development is reportedly 70-80% complete, entering the polishing phase.
