A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch, focusing on the often-overlooked Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the eShop. Unlike the plentiful GBA and DS games on the Switch Online app, this list highlights those available for individual purchase. We've compiled ten favorites – four GBA and six DS – presented without any specific ranking. Let's dive in!
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA version is a solid alternative. A worthwhile comparison piece, offering a potentially more streamlined experience. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of the platform, even appealing to those not usually drawn to shooters.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
As the Mega Man X series faltered on consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA. This side-scrolling action title, the first in an excellent series, might have some initial rough edges, but these are smoothed out in later installments. Still, it's the perfect starting point for this compelling franchise.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A second Mega Man entry, justified by its stark contrast to Mega Man Zero. Mega Man Battle Network is a unique RPG blending action and strategy within its innovative battle system. The concept of a virtual world residing within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later installments show diminishing returns, the original offers considerable fun.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
Another collection worth exploring entirely, but Aria of Sorrow stands out as a personal favorite, even surpassing the acclaimed Symphony of the Night for me on occasion. The soul-collecting system encourages replayability, and the gameplay is addictive. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its charm, making it a top-tier GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
Originally a cult classic with limited distribution, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge launched on DSiWare, propelling Shantae into the mainstream. This game bridges the gap, somewhat, as it was developed from the remnants of an unreleased GBA title. Interestingly, that GBA game is slated for release soon and might warrant inclusion on a future list.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a GBA game in its origins (though not initially localized), Ace Attorney is a well-known series. These engaging adventure games combine investigations with dramatic courtroom scenes, blending quirky humor with compelling narratives. The first game is exceptional, though later entries also hold their own.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick boasts equally strong writing and a unique gameplay mechanic. As a ghost, you use your abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery of your own death. A thrilling and often overlooked title that deserves recognition.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
A top-tier Nintendo DS game, ideally played on its original hardware due to its tight integration with the system. However, the Switch version serves as a viable alternative for those without access to a DS. A truly exceptional game in every aspect.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all the Nintendo DS Castlevania games. While all are worthwhile, Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from the updated button controls replacing the original's touch controls. However, all three DS titles in this collection are highly recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
A series that thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem, but Atlus's Switch port is surprisingly playable. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG, and Etrian Odyssey III, being the largest, is a rewarding experience despite its quirks.
