Persona and Metaphor: ReFantazio Composer's New Turn-Based JRPG Gets A Free Steam Demo

A free demo for Guns Undarkness will be available during the upcoming Steam Next Fest. Persona and Metaphor: ReFantazio composer Shoji Meguro is leading development, joined by Ghost in the Shell character artist Ilya Kuvshinov and Lotus Juice, the rapper known for his work on Persona 3.

Meguro has been with Atlus since 1995, composing iconic music for major franchises like Shin Megami Tensei and Persona. He pivoted to indie development in 2021 while continuing his collaboration with Atlus on music. Since then, he's been crafting a sci-fi stealth action JRPG, set to be published under the Kodansha Game Creators Lab.

First revealed during Indie Live Expo Winter 2021, Guns Undarkness launched a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2022, meeting its stretch goals. A free demo will debut at Steam Next Fest starting February 24, 2025, with an Early Access release planned for later this year.

A Blend of Metal Gear Solid and Persona Inspirations

Persona and Metaphor: ReFantazio Composer's New Turn-Based JRPG Gets A Free Steam Demo

According to its Steam page, Guns Undarkness is a turn-based tactical JRPG inspired by series like Metal Gear Solid and Persona. Set in 2045 with humanity on the brink of collapse, players join a private military company. You'll undertake missions with allies, unravel global conspiracies, and fight to save what remains.

Gameplay revolves around two core phases: stealth and combat. The stealth sections let you scout and navigate environments undetected; catching enemies off-guard grants significant advantages in the ensuing battle. Combat itself is turn-based, requiring strategic command of your squad and a variety of firearms to succeed.

The free demo provides roughly 20 minutes of gameplay, covering basic controls, the combat system, weapons, and early-stage strategies. Guns Undarkness is scheduled for an Early Access launch on PC in Spring 2025, offering about 10 hours of initial content. A final release date has yet to be confirmed.
