World of Warcraft's Feast of Winter Veil: A Lore-Filled Holiday Celebration
The annual Feast of Winter Veil in World of Warcraft mirrors our real-world Christmas celebrations, bringing festive cheer, unique rewards, and new additions each year. A recent collaboration between Blizzard and PlatinumWoW has yielded a captivating lore video, delving into the holiday's rich history within Azeroth.
This engaging video explores the event's origins, weaving together Dwarven myths of Greatfather Winter—a Titan-forged giant spreading winter's magic—and the Tauren's traditions of spiritual reflection and gratitude to the Earthmother. The video also highlights the rise of Smokeywood Pastures, a Goblin enterprise that has commercialized Winter Veil, reflecting real-world Christmas traditions.
A History Steeped in Lore
No exploration of Winter Veil would be complete without mentioning Metzen the Reindeer, named after the renowned Warcraft creative director Chris Metzen. This unfortunate reindeer has endured three separate kidnappings: by pirates and Dark Iron dwarves in Classic WoW, and later by the Grinch in the current version. The video concludes with a humorous twist—Metzen the Reindeer extends his thanks in the voice of Thrall, a fitting tribute given Chris Metzen's voice acting for the Orc Shaman.
This partnership with PlatinumWoW marks another successful collaboration between Blizzard and a talented content creator. PlatinumWoW has previously contributed lore videos on various aspects of WoW, including Nerubians, Vrykul, and the Scourge. This initiative, along with other collaborations such as Taliesin & Evitel's guides for returning players and Hurricane's cinematic trailers, demonstrates Blizzard's commitment to enriching the WoW experience through diverse content.
Players can still partake in the Feast of Winter Veil until January 5, 2024. This year's festivities include a tamable Dreaming Festive Reindeer for Hunters, new holiday transmogs, and the Grunch pet for all players. Don't forget to check under the tree in Orgrimmar or Stormwind for a special Winter Veil gift—a tradition continuing from last year's Junior Timekeeper's Racing Belt toy.
