The highly anticipated Dragon Quest 12 remains in development, with series creator Yuji Horii assuring fans that updates will be released "little by little." As shared by Automaton, Horii mentioned during a livestream with his radio show group, KosoKoso Hōsō Kyoku, that the Square Enix team is "working hard" on the game. This is the first update since May 2024, when Horii acknowledged the passing of Dragon Quest's character designer Akira Toriyama and composer Koichi Sugiyama. At that time, Yu Miyake, the series' lead producer, had already transitioned to lead Square Enix's mobile game division.
Amid concerns about potential cancellation due to restructuring at Square Enix and a lack of updates, Horii's recent comments confirm that Dragon Quest 12 is indeed still in the works. This reassurance comes as a relief to the game's dedicated fanbase.
Dragon Quest 12 was announced during the series' 35th anniversary celebration and marks the first mainline entry since Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age in 2017. In other news, Square Enix reported that the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake has exceeded sales expectations, selling 2 million copies.
