Zack Snyder Calls Rebel Moon Back-to-Back Shoot 'Exhausting'

Zack Snyder has announced he's stepping away from Rebel Moon temporarily to focus on other ventures.

The Star Wars-inspired sci-fi epic Rebel Moon debuted on Netflix in December 2023 amid significant anticipation. It unfolds in a galaxy dominated by the imperial Motherworld, whose military force, the Imperium, encroaches upon a peaceful village on the moon Veldt. True to its name, a group of rebels rises to challenge their oppressors.

Though Netflix had great expectations for Rebel Moon, the film faced harsh criticism from reviewers. IGN's assessment scored it a 4/10, describing it as, "Zack Snyder's space opera suffers from an unoriginal script, underwhelming action scenes, and a shallow narrative."

The sequel, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, released in April 2024, encountered similar feedback. IGN's review also gave it 4/10, noting, "The second installment, The Scargiver, presents an underdeveloped finale to a familiar plot, featuring weak character exploration and uninspired action sequences." Later in 2024, R-rated director's cuts of both films were released and were better received.

“I got diverted—not diverted, it's all high-class problems, as they say—for Netflix, I'm developing an LAPD SWAT film,” Snyder mentioned in a recent Variety interview. “So I thought, alright, I'll let the Rebel Moon universe simmer for a bit while I tackle this project.”

The Man of Steel director, widely recognized for his contributions to the now-rebooted DC Universe, also pointed out the challenges of managing two major productions at once.

“Honestly, producing both movies back-to-back was an intensely draining and lengthy endeavor. Taking a short pause has been refreshing,” he elaborated. “I’m deeply passionate about Rebel Moon, but the breather is welcome. We'll assess where things stand once I wrap up this current project.”

Regarding future narratives or potential film adaptations within the Rebel Moon franchise, Snyder remained mostly reserved. “The universe is rich with stories. Honestly, the potential feels limitless,” he commented. “Still, as I mentioned, I'm waiting to determine the best approach—or whether we’ll proceed at all.”

However, it's evident Snyder does perceive Rebel Moon as having boundless opportunities—especially with the recent launch of a video game spinoff, Blood Line, set in the same universe.
