"Hotwire Cars in Project Zomboid: A Guide"

by Patrick Apr 25,2025

The vast playable map in Project Zomboid can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you're thinking about traversing it on foot. However, fear not, as the game offers a more efficient way to get around: cars. Most cars in Project Zomboid are functional, and if you're unable to find the keys, hotwiring them is a viable option. Hotwiring a car is simpler than it might sound, requiring only a few button presses to secure your ride. Before you start collecting vehicles, though, there are some requirements you'll need to meet. While you don't need the best build to do this, keeping these requirements in mind will help when you're ready to start jacking vehicles.

How Does Hotwiring Work in Project Zomboid?

Successfully hotwiring a car in Project Zomboid allows you to drive it as long as it remains fueled and in good condition, even without the keys. Before you can hotwire a car, you'll need to achieve at least Level 1 in Electrical and Level 2 in Mechanics skills. Alternatively, selecting the Burglar occupation during character creation bypasses these skill requirements, enabling you to hotwire vehicles from the get-go.

How to Hotwire a Car in Project Zomboid

  1. Enter the vehicle.
  2. Open the vehicle radial menu (default key is V).
  3. Select the Hotwire option, then wait for a few seconds.

Once your character meets the necessary requirements, follow these three steps on any working vehicle you can enter. The hotwiring process is automatic; once completed, press W to start the engine. Remember, not all vehicles come with fuel, so it's wise to have some gas ready in Project Zomboid.

How to Level Electrical and Mechanical Skills

If you choose not to start as a Burglar, you can manually increase your Electrical and Mechanical skill levels through in-game activities. To gain XP in these skills, engage in the following:

  • Electrical: Dismantle electronics such as digital watches, radios, and televisions.
  • Mechanics: Remove and reinstall mechanical parts.

Reading books and magazines can also boost your skill levels. These can be found while exploring homes and commercial establishments. Check mailboxes, storage sheds, and bookshelves for readable items during your looting sessions. If you're running a Project Zomboid server as an admin and want to directly grant players skill XP, use the "/addxp" command following the syntax that appears in the chat box.

For dismantling or installing, you'll need a screwdriver or a more suitable tool. To remove parts from a vehicle, right-click on the part and select the Vehicle Mechanics option.
